Korean War veterans meeting Saturday
The Korean War Veterans Association of West Hawaii Chapter 279 meets at 10 a.m. Saturay at Denny’s Restaurant on Henry Street.
Membership is open to any person who has seen honorable service in the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard, if said service was within Korea or its territorial waters and airspace at any time between Sept. 3, 1945 and the present or said service was outside of Korea June 25, 1950 to Jan. 31, 1955. Associate members are also welcome.

Quilters meeting Saturday in Waimea
Mauna Kea Quilters meets from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Thelma Parker Memorial Library in Waimea. The group of patchwork quilters annually donates quilts to raise money for organizations in the Waimea area. Gatherings include a business meeting, show-and-tell, and time to share new ideas and techniques.

VFW meeting Saturday
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12122 meets at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the former Swing Zone in Kailua-Kona. Members will vote on new officers and discuss plans for operating the new facility. Members and prospective members may attend.

Coffee farmers
plan barbecue
The Kona Coffee Farmers Association will host its “Pre Harvest Barbecue,” for new and longtime members, from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Two-Step at Honaunau Bay. The association will provide hamburgers, hot dogs and buns. Members are asked to bring a potluck dish, such as salad, chips, drinks or dessert.
NFB West Hawaii meeting slated Sunday
Keola Hegent, the local delegate to the National Federation of the Blind Convention, will speak about his experience during the low-vision support group meeting slated for 1 p.m. Sunday at the Regency at Hualalai.

Meditation class offered Sunday
A free meditation class is slated from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano. The discourse will be on self-cherishing. Beginning and experienced meditators are welcome. Those attending should dress warmly and bring a cushion.

Kwong to lead Unitarian discussion Sunday

Cancer retreat
begins Monday
Kokolulu Farm Cancer Retreats in Hawi will offer a group retreat for individuals dealing with a cancer diagnosis Monday through Aug. 16. Scholarships available to Hawaii Island residents. Reservations are required.

Soroptimist club
meets Monday
Soroptimist International of Kona will hold its first meeting of the 2013-14 season at 5 p.m. Monday in the Community Hale, Building G, at the West Hawaii Civic Center. Officers will be installed and the year’s agenda will be discussed. Light refreshments will be served.

Brain injury group meeting Wednesday
The Brain Injury Support group meets from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hawaiian Rehab Services, located mauka of the Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union on Hualalai Road.
Michelle Lee, an advocate with the Hawaii Disability Rights Center, will speak about the services and programs the center provides, such as protection and advocacy for Hawaii’s residents with disabilities.
